Bag Abstraction

This is a charcoal triptych for an assignment from drawing where we instructed to abstract an object by magnifying it.

Shoes

Here are two drawings I did last year. The assignments were to do drawings using an object of our choice. We did a lot of sketches and drawings using this same object. These are the two largest of those drawings. For the object I chose a pair of shoes I got at a vintage store.

CD

Here are some mazes I did while experimenting with materials. I used the clear CD's you find in those packs of CD+R's when you buy them. There is only one in each so my materials were limited. I just happened to have a few packs and they each had one of the blank CD's.

Human/Bug

This is from an assignment for Drawing II where we had to combine a human with either a plant, animal or machine. I chose to mix the human form with a beetle. I took out a book from the library on beetles and combined sketches of their antennae and legs and wings with a photo of myself.

NUDES

Here are a few nude studies I did last year in drawing. They were probably each done in under 30 seconds, some under 15 seconds. Its not an excuse, I promise, just a fact.

De La Tour

Here are two paintings that I did this past semester in Painting II, one for our "Master Mentor" assignment and one for my final. The Master Mentor assignment required we use a "master" painter, in my case Georges de la Tour, to inspire our work. I used him because of his sense of light and dark within most of his works. specifically I looked at his Magdalena series. I decided to do another piece inspired by him for my final. They are hard to photograph because although they are mostly black, the paint is reflective and it is hard to get the same feeling from a photo that you would from standing right in front of the painting.

Birds

Ok so into my paintings. These two paintings I did in freshman year, last year, Painting I. The assignment was to paint from a photo collage. I took a photograph I had taken of a beautiful dead bird on the sidewalk, doubled up the bird in the one image from two different angles, and then made a smaller piece that had three panels, well one and 2 halves really. I painted the two pieces at the same time going back and forth between the two to avoid varying color palettes and techniques, a method I had not tried until then, but now use often due to it's convenience when working with slow drying paint (oil). Below are some detail shots from the larger bird.

Early Work

These are some of my early mazes. I did these sometime in high school. I've been slowly changing my method and as i do, I seem to forget how I did it before. I've tried to replicate the tree maze, but I just cannot seem to, now that my style has changed.

A Full Page Headache

I figured I'd post this maze first. It is my favorite drawing and easily the most effort I've ever put into one piece. I spent many late nights trying to finish it for a class project and thus have a very strong connection to it.
And yes, it is a maze. Dare you to solve it!

Experimentation

So just to start this off I am going to briefly introduce my personal art history. I have always drawn and I have been painting since high school. My passion and major is Video/Film but I will always be a painter. I find the connection between the two media fascinating and very strong. My paintings tend to be highly representational whereas my drawings are non representational. I'm still experimenting in video but then again, I suppose I'm always experimenting in all my work. I'll try to keep posting work; pieces I like and pieces I don't like. If you're interested and have comments, I'd love feedback. Enjoy.
